Propane Safety: What Every Homeowner Should Know

Propane has a strong safety record, and a few simple habits keep it that way. None of this is complicated — it's just worth knowing.

Know the smell

Propane is odorless, so suppliers add a rotten-egg / skunk smell so leaks are noticeable. If you smell it: don't use any flames, switches, or phones inside; get everyone out; shut off the tank valve if it's safe; and call your supplier or 911 from a safe distance.

Install detectors

Propane detectors (and carbon-monoxide detectors) add an early warning, especially for sleeping areas and basements where propane — which is heavier than air — can settle.

Avoid run-outs

Letting a tank run completely empty isn't just inconvenient — it can require a leak/pressure test before refilling and can let air and moisture into the system. Tank monitoring and keep-full delivery prevent this entirely.

Maintain your system

Have appliances and connections serviced by a qualified technician, keep the area around your tank and regulator clear, and never try to modify propane equipment yourself. Your supplier partner handles tanks, regulators, and leak testing.
